Followed by a year of intensive preparation, the new website www.garden-open.com goes online now.
What is garden-open.com? Well, the name is actually self-explanatory! It stands for an international portal for gardens that are available for visits to the public on one or many days during the year. Further, visitors to the website will be able to embark on a virtual garden tour. Comprehensive information around gardens, festivals, exhibitions, magazines, garden-tour operators and their programs will be included on the website.
garden-open.com is open to all gardens, whether they are private, commercial or publicly owned. All we ask is that the garden is interesting for others to visit, and it must be open to visitors at least once a year. The registration of a garden with garden-open.com is free of charge.
garden-open.com is not meant to compete with local or regional initiatives, or with national projects such as the National Garden Scheme in England. These projects have been forerunners for opening private gardens to the public. garden-open.com is determined to support the activities of such initiatives and will help to make their efforts known internationally. It is actually one of the main goals of garden-open.com is to present gardens to an international audience.
In future it will be possible for visitors of gardens, to easily access comprehensive information related to gardens located at their destination. For example, they will be able to retrieve information on opening hours, and also to get in touch with garden owners. The user of garden-open.com will be able to access exactly the information they are interested in.To make this project a success, it is very important that as many garden owners as possible participate in this project.
The registration of gardens is easy and will be through the Internet. In future, garden owners will be able to directly submit opening hours to the website, and these will help garden visitors with their search for relevant gardens during their trip.
This project is initiated and will be managed by the nursery Naturwuchs in Bielefeld, Germany. In future, national and international sponsors will contribute to grow this project and to make garden-open.com into the most important garden website on the Internet.
